Miley Cyrus - like everyone else - burned by Walmart

Today Miley Cyrus blogged, mileycyrus Kinda bummed. My E.P. got put on shelves wiff my clothing line and got released 3 days early on accident :( Thx 2 those who got the album :)

Come on Miley, it's Walmart. You're also going to see your lowest sales ever. You've got a seven song $5 EP selling for $8. One of those songs was already released on Lines Vines and Trying Times by the Jonas Brothers. Now you're at $1.34 per song. No bargain. If it wasn't for iTunes releasing Potty in the U.S.A., you wouldn't be #14 on the singles chart.

Feel sorry for KISS. They've got the same deal with Walmart.

As I've said over and over, in the music industry, most exclusives are cutting your own throat. Put it everywhere and see what bounces off the wall.

Trying to make sense of Walmart’s pricing on Miley Cyrus The Time of Our Lives
Official track list and EP preview audio

1- Kicking and screaming.
2- Party in the USA.
3- When I look at you.
4- Time of our lives.
5- Talk is cheap
6- Obsessed
7- Before the storm (ft Jonas Brothers)

Call me a dinosaur. I was trying to figure a few things out. First, if Walmart has an exclusive with the Miley Cyrus EP The Time of Our Life, why is it available on iTunes? Will the entire seven songs be available on iTunes? Then, I was trying to figure out if the whole CD was 99 cents per song, why was Walmart selling it for $8? Then it dawned on me, everyone has changed their pricing. iTunes is getting $1.29 for Potty in the U.S.A. If they do that with the whole EP, it would be $9.03.

On the other hand, you know EVERY song will be on YouTube. So if you only buy the songs you like (Before the Storm off the Jonas Brothers Lines Vines and Trying Times – just saved $1.29 there) and it’s available on iTunes, you don’t need to fork over the full $8 to Walmart. So much for its “exclusive.”

Hannah Montana 3 soundtrack debuts at #2
Sells half Jonas Brothers CD
Is Miley Cyrus fad done?

Never thought it would happen, but the Hannah Montana Volume 3 soundtrack did not jump out of the box at number 1. It placed #2 behind an R&B artist who hasn’t released a CD in nearly a decade – and it wasn’t Michael Jackson, either.

The Hannah Montana CD bowed with a mere 137,000 units; nearly half the 247,000 units Jonas Brothers Lines Vines and Trying Times launched at, and about a fourth of what I thought the soundtrack would do.

It opened second to R&B singer Maxwell who has not had a product since 2001. He sold 316,000 units, making Hannah Montana’s career look even more uncertain.

Cyrus came on the scene as a clone to Hilary Duff, whose show Lizzie Mcguire left the Disney stable two years before Hannah Montana bowed in 2006. January of 2009 Duff was released from her Hollywood Records contract.

In 2007 Cyrus’ tour sold 69 cities out in less than an hour. Her upcoming 45 cities tour has tickets available for every show five weeks after initial sale. Is this the beginning of the end of Cyrus’ career? She recently signed for a fourth season of Hannah Montana. She is filming The Last Song. The Hannah Montana Movie, opening with about $45,000, is still in the box office top 10 for 2009.

Only 137,000 units of her new CD. Questions are – is she as popular as ever but with the current economic conditions, people are listening to the songs on YouTube and other sites and foregoing purchasing. Are downloads higher, thus reducing initial CD sales? Or has Miley Cyrus lost the publics’ eye? Have her fans outgrown her as they get older. Have Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez replaced her in the hearts of Tweens?
