In November, Wikipedia reported Bandslam DVD would be released Dec. 7 (Pearl Harbor Day). Evidently that didn't happen. Can you imagine Wikipedia being wrong? Gasp. Personally, I like Bandslam and plan to pick up a DVD. Did better than I Love You Beth Cooper, which has yet to recoup its investment (finally saw it, I want my two hours back). Bandlam has netted something like $5-million above its cost to make. That's before DVD release - unless you're in the United Kingdom, where it has been available - probably since Dec. 7.
I Love You Beth Cooper, which was one of the lowest box office opening weekends of 2009, $5-million, is due on DVD Nov. 3. Bandslam opened at half that, $2.5-million.
If Bandslam marketers were smart, they'd release Bandslam around the same time to capture holiday shopping, but none of Bandslam's marketing has made sense since its release - like not releasing any singles from the soundtrack.
Three-million dollars makes a WHOLE lot of difference. Opening on a Wednesday does too. That marketing gambit helped Harry Potter become the #1 movie (predicted here in February or early April, but that was a no-brainer) for 2009.
Star Trek realized $76.5-million its opening weekend and Harry Potter realized $79-5-million. Shows what a little creative marketing does.
Unbelievable news is I Love You Beth Cooper is still in the Top 10! Yes, it held onto the #10 spot, earning half its opening weekend of $5-million. I’d be happy with nearly $8-million! More than Disney’s made so far off its Hannah Montana Volume 3 soundtrack, released July 7.
When will movie producers learn? This is not the 20th Century and marketing needs to be done differently. What started out with great promise in the spring ended in calamity this summer weekend.
While High School the Music 3, Hannah Montana the move both ended around $45-million their opening weekend – and 17 again did $24-million its first weekend, April 17 – I Love You Beth Cooper opened at fifth place, grossing, ready for this(?) - $5-million!
Thought this would be the movie that would give Harry Potter competition. It finished behind Public Enemies, a movie I haven’t even heard of . It finished behind the Twilight New Moon trailers!
What could have been if they had talked to Marketing Sociologist!
Look who showed up on ONE national television show to promote the movie she’s starring in – the one opening Friday in case you didn’t know. Thought it was going to be #1 at the box office. Hey, we can all be wrong at times. Let me know if you’ve seen any OTHER promotion, other than the movie trailer – that’s a given. World-class marketing on this film.
Hayden Panettiere FINALLY got out to promote I Love You Beth Cooper on Regis and Kelly today. One television show when she should have been doing them all weeks ago. If you want to see good 21st Century marketing, watch Jonas Brothers. They do Web casts, morning news shows, late night. They promote well.
It’s three weeks until Ashley Tisdale releases Guilty Pleasure. I expect to see this marketing queen everywhere – Jimmy Kimmel, Conan, Letterman, all the morning shows, probably even that show about Japanese game shows. Too bad her album released when American Idol is off – you know she’d be on that, too. I don’t mean in two weeks, either, I mean NOW.
Couldn’t find a clip of Panettiere on today’s Regis and Kelly – maybe it really is live – so I included this two year old clip where she didn’t mention I Love You Beth Cooper either, but she looks fabulous.
This spring I had such high hopes for I Love You Beth Cooper. Thought it would be the movie to challenge Harry Potter (which will be the highest grossing movie of the year). Alas, now I’m wondering which will be a bigger bomb, those North Korean missiles or I Love You Beth Cooper. Bruno is going to clobber it. Blood: The Last Vampire may even surpass it.
This has to be some of the worst marketing I’ve seen – and I’ve seen some terrible, terrible marketing. Where is Hayden Panettiere on Ellen, Conan, Letterman, Regis and Kelly, Ryan Secrest, Twitter, MySpace? The same trailer has been up on YouTube for months.
A search of Panettiere’s name one week before the film debuts reveals her tramp stamp was misspelled and she just broke up with Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones (Oh, you mean ANOTHER Steve Jones. Well, excuuuse me). No mention of the movie in those stories – or her TV show.
Even G-Force will do better! Shall we take bets on how long before I Love You Beth Cooper is out on DVD? I’ll wait. When does Bandslam come out again? At least there’ll be one movie worth catching this summer.
