Madea beats Jonas Brothers to a pulp at box office

"Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail" locked up $16.5 million in ticket sales to claim the top spot at the box office for a second straight weekend, beating out "Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience."

The Jonas Brothers film, featuring the band on stage and off, took in $12.7 million, the second-biggest opening for a concert film behind 2008's "Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert." That 3-D film, chronicling fellow Disney idol Miley Cyrus, premiered at the top of the charts after playing in just 683 theaters. "Jonas Brothers" opened in 1,271 theaters.

"'Hannah Montana' set a bar so high it's going to take forever to knock it off," said Chuck Viane, president of distribution for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. "Everything about it worked. She was coming off a great album and tour and three years on the Disney Channel. I don't think any set of circumstances will ever be quite what 'Hannah' had."

So, Jonas 3D bombed. Miley had half-as-many theaters and still did better. Get my broker. I'm selling my stock in Jonas Bros. Inc.

Tip Gone Amiss

Anyone remember the “Wish Gone Amiss” Disney episode? Well, I got a tip the Jonas’ were going to be going to the movie with Grandma “in Chandler” either tonight or through Saturday.

Have to admit Harkins Theaters PR person is fantastic. To protect that person, let’s just say he or she corrected my misunderstanding that Grandma Jonas lives in Sun Lakes. S/he gave me the correct suburb.

S/he also confirmed the Bros. family was not going to a movie in Chandler this weekend; but would not admit if the company knew the Jonas. Bros. agent or if the boys had contacted the movie chain. There was a "wink-wink" to the voice.

So doing investigative reporting – a lost art – I called a number I obtained. I asked if Mrs. Jonas was in. A boy sounding between 8 and 10 said no. I asked if any adult was home. “No.”

“Is this Frankie?” I asked. The person on the other end hung up the phone.

So, will the bus be parked in front of Grandma’s tonight? Will the whole family – including Frankie – be watching Jonas Bros. 3rd Degree, whoops, I mean 3D, in sunny Arizona this weekend, either at Harkins Gateway Pavilions 18 or Dickinson Palm Valley 14?

Will the boys be watching a Cleveland Indians ball game against Diamondbacks, Padres, Rockies or Rangers?

Sibling Hudgens and Jonas

I am so bummed. When I found out Vanessa had a younger sister, Stella Hudgens, I had dreams of her hooking up with Bonus Jonas, Frankie, in the future. Unfortunately Stella is five years older than Frankie. Ain’t gonna happen.

Turns out the Hudgens’ family lives in Oceanside, a beautiful suburb of Del Mar, California. Vanessa, take the Coaster. Wonderful view going into or out of San Diego. It will show you parts of North County you can’t see in a limo. There’s several Vanessa and Stella YouTubes, but I love Lindsay Lohan’s voice as much as Vanessa’s, so bear with this video.

In the meantime, I found some ads and outtakes on the celebrity Hudgens. Watch the TV rehearsal. Listen closely. You can hear Vanessa’s real voice is better than the canned music used during the show. Then, what ad has she not been in? I understand Stella is doing ads too. Homes are expensive in North San Diego County; right next to Camp Pendleton.
