In August my daughter discovered Selena Gomez when I blogged Dang, girl Selena Gomez Kiss & Tell. Was one of Tween Music's most read blogs. Will admit I have yet to put Kiss & Tell through the car stereo proving ground, but this weekend I was "spinning" Wizards of Waverly Place CD.
I'm knocked out by Disappear. I thought Vanessa Hudgens Everything I Own from Bandslam would get my "song of the year" for sure; until I heard Disappear. Both songs have fantastic chord progressions. According to Billboard, neither Hudgens or Gomez songs were released as singles. Billboard credits Hudgens with three songs to chart, Come Back to Me, Say OK and Sneakernight. None for Gomez.
Released more than 2 weeks ago, Bandslam soundtrack has yet to chart. This must be one of the most unsupported soundtracks in history. The movie itself had one of the worst opening weeks and has not done well. Don’t know if it is still in any theaters – and its only been out two weeks.
The only single released was Honor Society’s Where Are They Now. No release of Vanessa Hudgens’ Everything I Own. It reminds me of a friend who gets real interested in something, like engraving, and in two weeks gives it up after investing a ton of money in the new hobby. Seems like no one wanted to invest in making Bandslam soundtrack succeed.
As I’ve said, you don’t see the WHOLE song on the Everything I Own video you’ve been watching. Matter of fact, you only get half the song. The video tracks just under 3 minutes. The movie CD version tracks 5:40!
The great part about the movie CD version is it is like a live performance. Hudgen’s voice is tepid to begin but by the second minute she is performing like a trooper – just like a real live performance.
If you think Hudgens talent was wasted throughout the movie, just concentrate on the nearly A cappella part of this clip. So the movie stars two of the finest singers in the world – her and Alyson Michalka.
The screaming you hear at the beginning IS Lisa Kudrow. Yes, the CD features the piano solo of Alyson Michalka singing Phil’s Song, which you’ll come to know as Someone to Fall Back On.
Not violating any copyright laws here. Any good advertising person knows any song under 8 bars is not a copyright infringement.
From YouTube, which has part of Michalka’s solo voicing:
Thanks to all your employees who visited this site yesterday. Really appreciate it. Think you’re doing a terrific job marketing Bandslam. One of the best campaigns I’ve ever seen. Yet, I have one more way to improve it.
You’ve used two Tween favorites for your new movie – both in the Hollywood Records stable. This gives it a teen slant, yet after seeing it, the movie is more a drama in the Terms of Endearment realm.
The one fault I have, and it is not your fault, is you’ve released the video of Everything I Own, and a clip of Amphetamine, yet there has been no radio play. When I say radio play, I mean Internet as well as main stream.
Hollywood Records is working with Miley Cyrus putting Hannah Montana Volume 3 songs out before the CD was available. Ironically, those landed (played) right when her tour tickets went on sale.
You could be driving tons of momentum for Bandslam if songs were getting radio rotation. You need to address this with your Hollywood label connection.
Speaking of Bandslam, and the voices of angels, here’s Vanessa Hudgens’ bandslam tune. For the rest of the world that has been getting it news from TMJ, formerly TMZ until it became all Michael all the time, yes, Zac and Vanessa are no longer a couple, but they remain friends.
